Damian ELWES (b. 1960) is a British artist who lives and works in Santa Monica, California. In the 1940s, Henri Matisse advised young artists to make copies of their favorite paintings. Nearly half a century later, Damian Elwes decided to follow his advice with a twist.
Damian Elwes began his artistic career as a graffiti artist in the 1980s, before being convinced to turn to painting by the renowned street and pop artist Keith Haring. In 1984, Elwes’s first painted works were displayed alongside those of Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
