    The game most plays just like the original Dark Horizons Lore, with only a few key gameplay differences, such as new weapons and abilities: The Eastern Confederation MAVs were given Spider Homing Missles as a selectable secondary weapon, all Scout class MAVs were given the cloaking ability to hide from enemies, all MAVs (except Tank-class MAVs for obvious reasons) could now use a "Torso Twist" ability which lets the MAVmove its' torso separately from the feet, allowing the player to walk in one direction, whilst aiming in another. Other new additions included AI Bots for single player and multiplayer matches, Refit Stations, which allowed players to change their MAVselection, without having to kill themselves first and new game maps.

    For version 2.0 of Dark Horizons Lore, Max Gaming Technologies decided to add many new features and dramatically updated visuals. During early stages, the development title the new version was "Lore Gold", later changed to Dark Horizons Lore: Invasion. The addition of the Synapse Lighting Pack allowed for better visuals, which lead Max Gaming Technologies to completely redesign the MAVs to work better with the new lighting system. Another new visual addition to the game were modular weapons for all the MAVs - each weapon would have its own model that would change on the MAV, instead of each MAVhaving the same model for all of its different weapons.     The game is a mixture between first person shooters games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and mecha simulation games such as MechWarrior. The player can select between two different factions and various different MAV types, with each being equipped with unique abilities and weapons. You can also customize your MAV to some extent, such as being able to trade speed for armour or vice versa. The game has support for various different playing modes, such as equivalents of Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. Players can switch between first-person or third-person view while playing the game. Although primarily focused on multiplayer, single-player is allowed through the use of computer controlled bots.

    The game takes place in a futuristic world in the year 2155 where several factions are battling for control over the planet. The most important of these are the Federated States and the Eastern Confederation They are fighting over "No Man's Land", what was once North America. Due to high levels of radiation, soldiers fight each other through the use of Mechanized Assault Vehicles, machines connected and remotely controlled by the minds of their pilots.

    The game was positively received by critics, with GameShark commenting that "is easily on par with any major title from a top of the line publisher." gametunnel rated the game highly, praising its multiplayer on-line game-play, although being more critical of its single-player mode. also praised the game, although it did state that the games graphics and sounds were not on par with some other games.
