Ween began as a series of tape machine experiments made by New Hope, PA natives Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo—otherwise known as Gene and Dean Ween. Starting in 1984 the duo began performing along to pre-recorded backing tracks, which they eventually converted into a series of late ‘80s cassette releases.
