The Cisternoni (plural) actually consist of a huge reservoir measuring 30 by 50 meters. It was built by the architects of the 2nd Parthian Legion. Their task was to guarantee the water supply to the army camp (the Castra Albana) and the surrounding settlements. The construction was partly dug out of the rock and partly made of bricks.
History. The town of Albano has very ancient origins. Archeological findings show signs of life dating back to the Paleolithic Age (300.000 - 10.000 years ago) and to the Stone Age. However, it was only after the settlement of the Albano population along the banks of the lake (11th century BC) that the territory became truly populated.
