Dolph Sweet's final episode aired May 11, 1985, three days after he died. A running gag involved the Kaniskies' goldfish, Gertrude. The fish died in the first episode, and kept coming back in subsequent episodes.

Dolph Sweet as Police Chief Carl "Chief" Kanisky (seasons 1–4), known simply as "the Chief", was a widower with three teenaged daughters. After Dolph Sweet's death on May 8, 1985, his character was written out of the series as also having died, and the show continued with Nell taking over as head of the household.
During the show's run, Dolph was stricken with cancer and would die on May 8, 1985. At the beginning of the 1985-1986 season, the chief's passing was incorporated into the script and Nell became surrogate mother and father to his children.
