About Edmundite Missions. Edmundite Missions, a Catholic organization based in Selma, Alabama, provides food, clothing, and shelter to the poor and marginalized in the community. Inspired by the work of Jesus Christ, the mission aims to bring back to the Church those who have been alienated from it.
In 1937 the Society turned to the missions of African Americans, mainly in Alabama, thanks to Fr Francis "Frank" Casey. During the Civil rights movement and the lead up to the Selma to Montgomery marches, the Society was the only white group in Selma who openly supported the voting rights campaign. [15]
Feb 18, 2022 · In 1937 when two Edmundite priests established the Selma missions, 20 percent of Roman Catholics in the Deep South were Black, and Pope Pius XI thought it would be beneficial to send Edmundites to Selma as missionaries. Edmundites, assisted by the Sisters of St. Joseph, helped Black citizens establish themselves in advantageous ways.
