- 0:55Brandenburg exit polls show Social Democrats ahead of far rightReuters VideosSTORY: :: Scholz's Social Democrats celebrate likely win over far right in German state vote :: Potsdam, Germany :: September 22, 2024 :: Dietmar Woidke, Social Democrat, Brandenburg State Premier “When an openly, in big parts and overall openly right-wing extremist party in our state scores around 30% of votes, it’s hugely alarming for all of us, for all democrats, for everyone who stands up for freedom, openness and tolerance. Despite all the pride we feel today due to the good result, we must take this seriously. We must continue the debate after this election campaign. Brandenburg only has a chance if Brandenburg remains a liberal-minded and tolerant state.” The SPD, which has governed the state surrounding the capital Berlin since reunification in 1990, scored 30.9% of the vote, ahead of the far-right Alternative for Germany on 29.2%, in a last-minute comeback, according to provisional official results by the State Electoral Commissioner.9 hours ago

- 1:20Sri Lanka picks Marxist-leaning Dissanayake as presidentReuters VideosSTORY: Sri Lanka elected its new president on Sunday (September 22): the Marxist-leaning Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The public put faith in his pledge to fight corruption and bolster a fragile economic recovery, following its worst financial crisis in decades. Dissanayake led from start to finish during the counting of ballots, polling over 42% of the votes. That’s despite not having any political lineage - like some of his rivals in the presidential election. He knocked out incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe and opposition leader Sajith Premadasa to become Sri Lanka's 10th president. The election was also a referendum on Wickremesinghe. He led the heavily indebted nation's fragile economic recovery from a meltdown in 2022. But the austerity measures that were key to this recovery hindered his bid to return to office. He finished third with 17% of the vote. Premadasa, in second place, got almost 33% This election marked the first time in Sri Lanka's history that the presidential race was decided by a second round of counting. That’s after the top two candidates failed to win the mandatory 50% of votes to be declared winner.18 hours ago

- 1:22Harris says she is trying to get a second debate with TrumpReuters VideosSTORY: :: September 20, 2024 :: Atlanta, Georgia :: Kamala Harris says she is trying to get a second debate with Trump :: "I'm trying to get another debate. We'll see. But in our debate last week, remember when he said everyone wanted Roe v Wade to be overturned? Well, exactly. I don't know where everyone is either because women have been arrested and charged for miscarriages. They didn't want that." :: Harris also addresses deaths tied to abortion bans in states including Georgia "One in three women in America lives in a state with a Trump abortion ban. This includes Georgia and every state in the South except Virginia. Think about that when you also combine that with what we know has been longstanding neglect around an issue like maternal mortality. Think about that when you compound that with what has been long standing neglect of women in communities with a lack of the adequate resources they need for health care; prenatal, during their pregnancy, postpartum. Think about that. And these hypocrites want to start talking about 'this is in the best interest of women and children'. Well, where have you been? Where have you been when it comes to taking care of the women and children of America." Harris and Trump debated each other for the first time on Sept. 10, in a contest that polls showed was won by the Democratic nominee. Trump last week said he would not participate in another debate against Harris before the Nov. 5 election.2 days ago

- 1:54Business Lookahead: Go big or go homeReuters VideosSTORY: From an inflation reading in the U.S., to a snapshot of the world economy, these are the stories to watch in business and finance in the coming week. :: Inflation in focus A reading of the Fed's favorite inflation indicator will show if price pressures have continued to moderate. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index is due on Sept. 27. Investors will also get fresh numbers on consumer confidence and durable goods in the week to come. :: Recession watch Flash business activity data, due from Monday onward, will provide the latest snapshot of the state of the world economy. Markets appear happy, for now, that the Fed's half-point rate cut will help avert a U.S. recession, and so, a global one. But it's not all rosy. In Germany, the Purchasing Managers Index moved deeper into contraction territory. And a Chinese economy that is still struggling will likely hurt others. :: Rate-cutting race Central banks in Sweden and Switzerland are next up in the Great Rate-Cutting Race of 2024. Market participants expect both to lower benchmark rates at their meetings on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Markets are split on the size of the Swiss National Bank's cut. Meanwhile, Sweden's Riksbank is all but certain to deliver a 25 basis point cut. :: Picking a premier Japan's ruling party picks its new leader and, by extension, a new prime minister on Sept. 27. It's a crowded field of nine with three seen as frontrunners though with very different policy views. The leadership race complicates the Bank of Japan's job - no matter who wins. A snap election is likely in late October, making policy action at that month's meeting difficult.3 days ago

- 1:44For Sri Lanka's minority Tamils, election offers little hopeReuters VideosSTORY: Tamils in Sri Lanka have little hope that Saturday's (September 21) presidential election will improve their lot. This is Jaffna, capital of the Northern Province, one of the areas where insurgents from the ethnic minority once fought for a Tamil nation during Sri Lanka's civil war. Tamils form 12% of the country's 22 million population but have long been electorally sidelined. They've traditionally voted for Tamil parties active in the north, but fisherman Paramasamy Thanabalasingam says this time their vote is split among many factions which claim to represent their concerns. "Anyhow, the new president will be chosen from the three main candidates and the decision will be made by the majority Sinhala people. There won’t be any change for us." Saturday's is the first presidential election since the island nation plunged into its worst financial crisis in decades in 2022. Economic recovery is at the core of a close three-way battle between President Ranil Wickremesinghe, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, and Marxist-leaning politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The fisherman says he and his family were displaced during the civil war, and the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with Sri Lanka's meltdown mean they've lurched from crisis to crisis. "Now I'm thinking about the future with no idea," he says. The 26-year civil war between Tamil insurgents and government forces ended in 2009. Rights groups accuse both sides of abuses during the conflict in which 40,000 people died, according to U.N. estimates.3 days ago

It's a family with two children and I trust, as such I have transmitted this in conversations with the vice president of Venezuela, that there should be no risk whatsoever for them." :: "That is in a document of guarantees that I signed." Gonazalez, whom the opposition insist was the real winner of a July election awarded to Maduro, said it was probable that if he had stayed in Venezuela he would be jailed and possibly tortured. He left for Spain after securing guarantees that his family and property in Venezuela would be safe, he added in the interview, saying he wanted to be free to seek support from world leaders for his case to be president.3 days ago

- 0:56Harris tells Oprah any intruder to her home is 'getting shot'Reuters VideosSTORY: :: Kamala Harris says any intruder in her home is 'getting shot' :: September 19, 2024 :: Farmington Hills, Michigan :: Harris also called for action to stop gun violence at schools "And when you said you have guns know at the debate..." "I'm a gun owner, Tim Walz is a gun owner, .. (Winfrey saying: I didn't know that) If somebody breaks in my house, they're getting shot. (Winfrey saying: I hear that, I hear that.) I probably should not have said that. But my staff will deal with that later. (Winfrey saying: But you have been a gun owner for a while.) Yes, I have." "Let's all agree that the trauma so many children, even those who have not directly experienced the tragedy. (Winfrey saying: Just being in the environment) I cannot tell you the number of young people who I mean, our kids had active shooter drills that the they're concerned that there might be somebody who would kill them while they're at school. This is not the sign of a civil society and it doesn't have to be this way. It does not have to be this way." The Democratic presidential candidate and gun owner made the seemingly unguarded comment in an interview with Oprah Winfrey before a live studio audience when the conversation turned to gun laws. "I probably should not have said that. But my staff will deal with that later," Harris said, laughing. Harris, who has robust protection from the U.S. Secret Service, made the statement amid heightened concern about political violence after a second potential assassination attempt against her opponent in the Nov. 5 presidential election, Republican Donald Trump. Harris mentioned her gun ownership in 2019 when she was a U.S. senator and again in last week's debate with Trump in what seemed like an appeal to more conservative voters. Harris owns a handgun for personal safety reasons, and it is stowed away in a secure location at her California home, a White House source told Reuters earlier. The source declined to identify the make of gun, but said it is the same gun Harris mentioned in 2019 on the campaign trail. Harris, the former district attorney of San Francisco and California attorney general, told reporters in 2019: "I am a gun owner, and I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do - for personal safety. I was a career prosecutor."3 days ago
