He married firstly Elisabeth von Mecklenburg (c.1 1250) and had issue, Liutgard married duke John of Brunswick-Luneburg and Albert I of Anhalt-Zerbst. Elisabeth, married Burchard von Wölpe.
Biographie Gerhard I., Sohn Adolfs IV. von Schauenburg und Holstein und Heilwigs von der Lippe, geb. um 1232, folgte neben seinem älteren Bruder Johann I. 1239 dem Vater, der ins Kloster trat, in beiden Grafschaften nach, unter Vormundschaft des Herzogs Abel von Schleswig, dessen folgenreiche Verbindung mit Mechthild, Adolfs IV.
