The Ognissanti Madonna by Giotto. This large altarpiece, painted by Giotto in 1310 circa, is a very important landmark in art history. It was painted for the Florentine Church of Ognissanti, hence the name. Before Giotto, painting was still tied to the schematic Byzantine style and its archaisms.
Madonna Enthroned (Ognissanti Madonna) The artist who most exemplified and, in large part created, new developments in painting was Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267-1337). He was born in the Mugello Valley near Florence and lived mainly in that city, which was the center of the new Renaissance culture.
The Ognissanti Madonna demonstrates his revolutionary naturalism and commitment to realism while simultaneously incorporating both Medieval and Gothic elements. The pointed throne, for example, is a classically Gothic touch.
