The Gospel Music Workshop of America, also called GMWA for short, has a beautiful history that finds some of gospel’s greatest paying their dues to eventually become legends in the evolving forms of traditional and contemporary gospel.

The GMWA presently meets twice a year. A board meeting is held in the spring and the annual convention session is held at a major venue beginning on the second Sunday of August. The conventions include workshops and musical performances during the week and attract 12,000 to 15,000 registrants annually.
The Gospel Music Workshop of America was organized in March of 1967 by Rev. James Cleveland. After the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, the GMWA is the oldest and largest gospel music convention including 185 chapters and over 75,000 members.
Our Vision. The Gospel Music Workshop of America is a non-profit, interdenominational, interracial, international and voluntary association of gospel singers and musicians. It also includes ministers, educators, business professionals, and University-College-Seminary academic partnerships.
The Gospel Music Workshop of America is a Christian organization convening annually, where national performers, recording artists, new and inspiring songwriters, educators, liturgical dancers, the young and old, pastors, and other minister to each other and to the needs and directions within the African American religious experience.
