Andersen AFB was placed under the installation management authority of Joint Region Marianas in October 2009, along with Naval Base Guam. The two bases are about 30 miles (48 km) apart at opposite ends of the island. Established in 1944 after the Liberation of Guam as North Field, it is named for Brigadier General James Roy Andersen (1904–1945).

Naval Base Guam is home to Commander Submarine Squadron 15, Coast Guard Sector Guam, and Naval Special Warfare Unit One, and supports 28 other tenant commands. It is the home base to dozens of Pacific Command, Pacific Fleet, Seventh Fleet, and Seabee units.
Naval Base Guam (NBG) is responsible for all naval properties on the island and hosts several key tenant commands such as the Commander, Submarine Squadron Fifteen (CSS-15), the USS Frank Cable, the USS Emory S.
