I would describe it as meta humor. A lot of the humor comes about understanding Sean and Hayes underlying insecurities, how the industry is going and understanding other podcasts in the podcast space. I think the show would be boring if you started off with just it. You need to understand who PFT and Scott Auckerman are to understand a lot.
