Herbert William Trimpe [1] ( / trɪmp /; May 26, 1939 – April 13, 2015) was an American comics artist and occasional writer, best known as the seminal 1970s artist on The Incredible Hulk and as the first artist to draw for publication the character Wolverine, who later became a breakout star of the X-Men .

His interest in aviation spurred him on to publish an eight-page comic book entitled Firehawks , in which the Bugatti 100P aircraft was a major component of the story.

He joined Marvel in 1967, after a year in Vietnam and three years as a student at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He was hired by Stan Lee as a production assistant.
