One of the world’s most populous countries, Vietnam occupies the easternmost part of mainland Southeast Asia. It has a long coastline, much of which fronts on the South China Sea to the east and south. The country is bordered by the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, Cambodia and Laos to the west, and China to the north. Its capital is Hanoi.
A brief history for kids to learn about Vietnam. The first Vietnamese state was established in 2879 BC, known as the Xích Quỷ kingdom. After the Han-Nanyue War in 111 BC, China consolidated most of current Northern Vietnam, and it remained under Chinese rule for the next thousand years.
The Vietnam War. In the late 1800s, the area that is now Vietnam was colonized by France and called French Indochina. It remained under French control for many years, but in 1945, Communist leader Ho Chi Minh defeated the French. The country was divided into two parts: North and South Vietnam.
