     If you have an attribute with this information, you can do a selection by attribute ("select feature using an expression" in QGIS).

     Then you can save this selection as a new layer.

     If not, you can create another layer representing your area of interest (is it the yellow circles in the image you provided?) and intersect it with your original layer.

     With the following code I have successfully solved the problem.

     As this is calling an external service (openstreetmaps.org) it can take a while for larger datasets. However, you probably only do this once in a while when new cities have been added to the list.
