During fiscal year 2020, more than 7.3 million fish weighing just over 645,000 pounds were produced and stocked into Michigan waters. This included seven salmonid species, one hybrid salmonid, and two cool water species. The fleet of specialized stocking trucks traveled over 85,000 miles on 368 trips stocking fish at 616 sites.

From the 1920s through 1940s, the Department of Conservation, predecessor to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, commonly stocked species such as bluegill, bass and perch. We learned through time that these species were doing just fine on their own.
Sep 7, 2021 · The hatchery had been rearing and releasing up to 85,000 ciscoes, or lake herring, into Lake Michigan each year, but that program was suspended in 2020 when surveys showed the lake’s population of ciscoes was naturally increasing. Dey said if the number of wild ciscoes begins to drop, the hatchery will start raising them again.
