The first step is to consult with your insurance provider. If you have an HMO insurance plan, you are required to choose a primary care provider from a list of in-network doctors approved by your plan. If you have a PPO plan, you can choose any doctor in or out of your network, though insurance copays for out-network PCPs will generally be higher.
