You drive around a lot, but without roads. Some missions have a lot of backtracking, but it’s up to you to take different routes at that point and discover new things again. A lot of the game is running & improvising. For example, there's an entire pitch-black section. Apparently you are supposed to use a light of some sort - I jumped my way through and found a save point mid-way into it with luck (this is probably the worst way to sell this game). As far as where to go, it's open-ended.
