PlayStation 5 is a getting a system architecture 'deep dive' today, hosted by Sony designer Mark Cerny - and we'll be streaming it, watching it and updating you live right here.

Sony's Mark Cerny discussed, during the PS5 reveal event, one of the paramount efforts Sony is making with the PS5 — listening to developers to ensure the learning period of getting up to speed on the PS5 would be quick for developers. Sony is estimating it will take under a month for most developers to get a handle of the PS5's tech, which is even lower than the company's estimated month to two months on the PS4.

The SSD, the custom-built solid state drive, is also key to what Sony is endeavoring to do to help developers. Cerny explained that, rather than the PS4's HDD bandwidth of 50-100 MB/s, the target speed of the PS5 is 5GB/s at least. And the hope is that load times, as opposed to 1GB in 20 seconds on the PS4, can become 0.27 seconds for 2GB on the PS5.

Cerny also explained that the SSD isn't just about improving loading times for the player, but also to benefit game design. The hope is that developers will be able to use the SSD to more easily load in textures and areas of a level more quickly than ever before so as to not have to segment levels with the all-to familiar elevator rides we experience in games.

The SSD on the PS5 will be more like having more RAM — "most of RAM is working on the game's behalf" Cerny explained. The core goals of the SSD and the PS5, according to Cerny are:

•Boot the game in a second

    •No load screens

Install times and the lack of them on the PS5 are clearly important priorities for Sony given Cerny's explanation.

"With an SSD though, no seeks. So no need to make brand-new files with the changes incorporated. Which means no installs as you know them today," he said.

But the SSD isn't the only element that allows for all of this to happen, Cerny explained. The SSD has a custom flash controller, which includes six different levels of priority for developers to use. What this, essentially, means, is that developers can code what elements of the game need to be prioritized in how they're delivered to the player.

Cerny also spoke to the expandability of the SSD. The kind of storage you need, according to Cerny, depends on how you use it. A large external harddrive is ideal for players with a larger PS4 backlog. Cerny suggested keeping PS4 games on this hard drive so as to not take up space of the pricier PS5 SSD space.

For playing PS5 games, Cerny says, ideally, players will add to their SSD storage. The PS5 will have a bay that supports some commercial M.2 NVMe drives players can purchase to expand their memory. However Cerny did not specifically list them just yet.

A custom RDNA 2-based AMD GPU is included in the PS5. Speaking with AMD, Sony aimed to have the PS5's GPU reduce power consumption, optimized for performance, and add a new, advanced feature set — but a set that is malleable. Cerny said, in fact, that the hope is for players seeing PC GPUs around the launch of the PS5 with similar features means Sony's efforts have proven valuable, not that Sony is just taking already existing GPUs off the shelf.

As for backward compatibility, Cerny confirmed PS4 and PS4 Pro legacy modes will be included for the system to run PS4 games, while the PS5 will normally run in a native mode for next-gen games. At launch, Cerny confirmed the PS5 will be able to play "almost all" of the top 100 most played PS4 games at the launch of the system (that 100 is determined by most play time). As for exact backward compatibility, Sony had the following to say in an updated breakdown:

"Lastly, we’re excited to confirm that the backwards compatibility features are working well. We recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5. With more than 4000 games published on PS4, we will continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time."

And while we've known about ray tracing being a major feature on PS5, Cerny spoke a bit more at length about its uses in the PS5 as well as what it's meant to be used for.

Cerny also spoke to some of the new features the PS5 allows for, and how 3D audio is such a major focus in letting developers build "new dreams." Sony's goals for audio on PS5 are:

•Great Audio for All (not just people with soundbars or home theater systems)

•Hundreds of advanced sound sources - the intention to make every sound in a game matter and be impactful

•Presence and locality - the feeling of a player actually being in the world of the game

So Cerny described a bit about Sony's Tempest audio engine being used on the PS5, and while it will have many applications for PS5, its 3D audio functionality is key to Sony's endeavors. Cerny said the process will be a multi-year process to properly allow for all the variances in how players listen to the games they play.

While 3D audio on headphones is more precise, Sony is implementing virtual surround sound for TV speakers — essentially, creating a sweet spot for the player to be situated so that the speakers can simulate 3D audio. Headphones are the "gold standard" for audio on PlayStation 5 at this time, though.
