I wouldn't call it a scam, no.. but it does sometimes border on heartstring-tugging words and appeals to urgency — it does smart a little when you see the financials, the amount of money coming in and going out, and still face hiring freezes within the Foundation.
ANSWER: This is not suddenly happening. Wikipedia has been doing donation drives like this for many years. This may just be the first time you have seen them. The issue is that Wikipedia doesn't want to have ads on their pages to make money.
