The Kaweah River, which flows from 13,000 ft peaks in the southern Sierra, is one of the shortest and steepest drainages in the Sierra. It offers excellent whitewater options for intermediate and advanced kayakers and rafters only a few hours from Los Angeles and a short drive from the southern Bay Area.
- to Bearpaw Meadow (11.4 miles/18.2 km): The trail leaves from Crescent Meadow on the southeast edge of the Giant Forest. Backpackers with a wilderness permit may access this trailhead 24 hours a day, even when closed to normal traffic.
- to Big Arroyo Junction (11 miles/17.6 km): East of Bearpaw, you begin your ascent into the Great Western Divide. After passing some nice campsites at Lone Pine Creek (13.1 miles/21.0 km from the trailhead), the trail follows a long series of switchbacks, overshadowed by the Angel Wings, a sheer granite wall to the north of the trail.
