The river flows out of the 13,000-foot peaks of Sequoia National Park into Terminus Reservoir in a short twenty miles. This makes the Kaweah drainage one of the steepest in the United States. This reversal flushes only to the left and has been known to hold a kayak for five minutes. Mile 8.1 -- South Fork of the Kaweah enters on the left. The Kaweah River flows westward 32 miles from the Sierra Nevada to the Central Valley, where it flows into Lake Kaweah and is managed for flood protection and stored for irrigation purposes. From there, the river splits into two rivers: the Lower Kaweah and St. Johns at McKay Point, located southeast of the City of Woodlake.
The Kaweah is a free-flowing river. With no upstream dams, the river depends on snowmelt for its flows. The Kaweah begins to run when the snow begins to melt in the mountains. Flows generally peak around Memorial Day. * Season length and flows may vary. For this year's flow predictions and real-time water levels go to the River Flows page.
