De mortibus persecutorum ("On the Deaths of the Persecutors") has an apologetic character but given Lactantius's presence at the court of Diocletian in Nicomedia and the court of Constantine in Gaul, it is considered a valuable primary source for the events it records. When Constantine appointed Lactantius to be tutor to his son Crispus, Lactantius came to the imperial court at Trier.
