Apr 29, 2024 · Lake Eyre was first sighted by a European in 1840—English explorer and British colonial official Edward John Eyre, after whom it was named. The lake’s extent had been determined by the 1870s. Lake Eyre, the lowest part of which lies about 50 feet (15 metres) below sea level, consists of two sections, Lake Eyre North and Lake Eyre South.

Lake Eyre (pronounced "air") is the lowest point in Australia, at about 15 m (49 ft) below sea level.
