On February 15, 1999, 19 Members were elected to serve on the first Nunavut Legislative Assembly. However, Members were not sworn in until April 1st. On April 1, 1999 two new territories, Nunavut and a new Northwest Territories, were created in Canada’s North. The 19 Members elected in Nunavut officially took office.

About the Legislative Assembly. The Legislative Assembly is the seat of elected government in the Northwest Territories. Members are elected every four years from each of 19 ridings to serve in a unique consensus government that is studied and admired the world over.
This is a list of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assemblies dates and legislative sessions from 1870–present. The current capital is Yellowknife since 1967. There have been twenty-eight legislatures since becoming a territory in 1870.
