Oct 12, 2022 · At 78°13′ N, just 1,316km (818mi) from the North Pole, Longyearbyen is the world’s northernmost settlement with a population greater than 1,000. The town experiences the midnight sun for 127 days from mid-April to late August and, conversely, the polar night for 111 days from late October to mid-February.
Svalbard Airport, Longyearbyen provides the main point of entry and exit. The island has an Arctic climate, although with significantly higher temperatures than other places at the same latitude. The flora benefits from the long period of midnight sun, which compensates for the polar night.
Longyearbyen, (pronounced lungyer-byin) is the largest populated area, and capital of the Norwegian region of Svalbard. The settlement is generally regarded as the northernmost town in the world as well as the most easily accessed frontier in the Arctic, and is an ideal base for the greater exploration of Svalbard and the high Arctic.
