Austria is bordered by Germany to the northwest, the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia to the northeast, Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The country occupies an area of 83,879 km 2 (32,386 sq mi) and has a population of around 9 million.
The westernmost third of the somewhat pear-shaped country consists of a narrow corridor between Germany and Italy that is between 32 and 60 km (20 and 37 mi) wide. [1] The rest of Austria lies to the east and has a maximum north–south width of 280 km (170 mi). [1]
