As an eyewitness to the Savior, Matthew recorded a detailed account of Jesus' life, the story of his birth, his message, and his many deeds in the Gospel of Matthew. He also served as a missionary, spreading the good news to other countries.

Matthew’s Gospel, along with the Gospels of Luke, John, and Mark, is an inspired—and thus accurate and true—history of the life of Christ. His Gospel is the longest of the four, and some scholars believe it was the first to be written.
Matthew is included in all four canonical lists of the twelve apostles (Matt 10:3, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:15, Acts 1:13). He is also traditionally identified with Levi, a tax collector whom Jesus calls and dines with in Mark 2:13-17 and Luke 5:27-32 .
