Also called Levi, Matthew was not a stand-out character in the Bible; He is only mentioned by name in the lists of apostles and in the account of his calling.
Matthew is included in all four canonical lists of the twelve apostles (Matt 10:3, Mark 3:18, Luke 6:15, Acts 1:13). He is also traditionally identified with Levi, a tax collector whom Jesus calls and dines with in Mark 2:13-17 and Luke 5:27-32 .
