The Melkites, or Byzantine rite Catholics of Middle Eastern origin, are the descendants of the early Christians of Antioch (Syria). Christianity was established in this area of the Middle East by St. Peter before he traveled on to the imperial city of Rome.
Melkite Greek Catholic Church. Greek Melkite Catholics, often referred to in their home countries as Roum or Rom 1 , are descendants of an ancient church in greater Syria that encompassed peoples in lands that lie today in Southern Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Palestine.
