Midway Atoll comprises three coral islands and 580,000 acres of submerged reef and ocean at the far northern end of the Hawaiian archipelago. From left to right, the islands are Sand Island, tiny Spit Island and Eastern Island.
Kuaihelani (Hawaiian name for Midway Atoll meaning “the back bones of the heavens”) was formed about 28 million years ago when lava flowed from Lōʻihi (hot spot in the earth’s crust located south of the Big Island that is a continuing source of energy for the Hawaiian archipelago).
