The Mountains of Mourne are a compact range of granite peaks rising abruptly from the Irish Sea that extend for 9 miles (14.5 km) between Newcastle and Rostrevor. They date back to the Neogene Period (i.e., 23 to 2.6 million years ago) and their Irish name is Beanna Boirche.
Although we have a dedicated guide to the various Mourne Mountain walks, I’m going to show you our favourites. These range from moderate to hard and for many of the trails you’ll need hiking experience and a good level of fitness.
The Mountains of Mourne are home to endless things to see an do, aside from long hikes. Below, you’ll find forest parks, breath-taking beaches and several of the most unique things to do in Northern Ireland.

- Slieve Donard, Co. Down – 2,970 ft (850 m) The only mountain on our list to rise over 800 m, Slieve Donard is the tallest mountain in the Mourne Mountains and Northern Ireland.
- Slieve Commedagh, Co. Down – 2,516 ft (767 m) Just missing out on the top spot on our list of highest mountains in Northern Ireland is the often overlooked Slieve Commedagh.
- Slieve Binnian, Co. Down – 2,451 ft (746 m) Now into Northern Ireland’s top three highest mountains, Slieve Binnian is a great hike for amazing views of Silent Valley and the surrounding mountains.
- Slieve Bearnagh, Co. Down – 2,385 ft (739 m) Perhaps offering the best view in the Mournes, Slieve Bearnagh is one of the most popular hikes in the north.

Mar 14, 2019 · The Mourne Mountains are in Co. Down, Northern Ireland in the Province of Ulster. The range can be found about 30 miles south of Belfast or 60 miles north of Dublin. The easiest way to reach the Mourne Mountains is to self-drive by car.
