The northernmost atoll in the Line Islands Archipelago halfway between Hawaii and American Samoa is Palmyra Atoll. Palmyra is a National Wildlife Refuge administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services in the Department of Interior as transferred from the Office of Insular Affairs to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on January 18, 2001.

Palmyra Atoll, coral atoll, unincorporated territory of the United States, in the Northern Line Islands in the west-central Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southwest of Honolulu. It comprises some 50 islets with a combined area of 4 square miles (10 square km) and an average elevation.
The Palmyra Atoll is actually a U.S. territory, part of the U.S. Pacific Remote Island Areas that straddle the equator. More importantly, it has been designated as a National Wildlife Refuge, where habitats are recovering from their wartime past, and where researchers are tracking threats from invasive species and sea level rise.
