Big Woods. The Lakeshore Nature Preserve is the natural areas on the University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus, Including Picnic Point, Frautschi Point, and the Lakeshore Path. The 300 acres Preserve extends along Lake Mendota from the UW Memorial Union to the Village of Shorewood Hills and includes more than three miles of Lake Mendota shoreline.
Jul 5, 2017 · Picnic Point. Walking to Picnic Point, the spit of land that juts out behind the UW Hospitals, is a Madison tradition. Numerous trails trail through the area with views of sailboats in University Bay and Madison on one side and wider vistas of Lake Mendota on the other. There are fire pits dotting the property that can be reserved.
Picnic Point Fishery Area includes 58 acres of agricultural fields and 53 acres of brush/wooded habitat. There is over 3700 feet of pristine Lake Winnebago shoreline. The upland habitat has historically been used for agricultural production but is being converted to tall-grass prairie, short-grass prairie, and oak savanna.
