Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508 to repaint the vault, or ceiling, of the chapel. The work was completed between 1508 and late 1512. He painted the Last Judgment over the altar, between 1535 and 1541, on commission from Pope Paul III Farnese.

Nov 4, 2011 · Michelangelo, Pope Julius II and the Sistine Chapel. This week (Nov. 1) in 1512, the world got to view what is arguably the most famous work of art in human history as Michelangelo’s frescoes on the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome were first revealed to the public.
The interests of Julius II lay also in the New World, as he ratified the Treaty of Tordesillas, establishing the first bishoprics in the Americas and beginning the Catholicization of Latin America. In 1508, he commissioned the Raphael Rooms and Michelangelo 's paintings in the Sistine Chapel .

Oct 16, 2019 · In 1508, Pope Julius II (also known as Giulio II and "Il papa terribile" ), asked Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel's ceiling. Julius was determined that Rome should be rebuilt to its former glory, and had embarked on a vigorous campaign to achieve the ambitious task.

The work was finished in October 1512 and on the Feast of All Saints (1 November), Julius II inaugurated the Sistine Chapel with a solemn Mass. The nine central panels show the Stories of Genesis , from the Creation to the Fall of man, to the Flood and the subsequent rebirth of mankind with the family of Noah.
