Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP) spans the districts of Kasese, Kamwenge, Rubirizi, and Rukungiri. The park is approximately 400 kilometres (250 mi) by road south-west of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The park was founded in 1952 as Kazinga National Park and renamed two years later to commemorate a visit by Queen Elizabeth II of England. The park is home to over 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species. The Katwe explosion craters mark the park’s highest point at 1,350m above sea level, while the lowest point is at 910m, at Lake Edward.
The national park includes the Maramagambo Forest area while sharing borders with the Kyambura Game Reserve, the Kigezi Game Reserve, and the Kibale National Park in Uganda. As noted above, it also shares a border with Virunga National Park of the DRC. Queen Elizabeth National Park covers an area of 764 square miles (1,978 sq km).
