Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church. This church was one of the last Catholic churches built in the city, and was erected near Tireman and Southfield Freeway, just east of River Rouge Park. Saints Peter and Paul is the oldest church building in continuous use remaining in the City of Detroit. It was Detroit’s original, consecrated cathedral for just shy of 30 years. The cornerstone was laid by Bishop Peter Paul LeFevere in 1844, but the building was constructed on a pay-as-you-go basis (debt-free) and was not finished until 1848.
