Tetum (Tetun [ˈt̪et̪un̪]; Indonesian: Bahasa Tetun; Portuguese: Tétum [ˈtɛtũ]) [3] is an Austronesian language spoken on the island of Timor. It is one of the official languages of Timor-Leste and it is also spoken in Belu Regency and in Indonesian West Timor. There are two main forms of Tetum as a language:
Bahasa Tetum (juga Tetun) merupakan bahasa tradisional/rasmi di Timor Timur dan turut dituturkan di Indonesia. Bahasa ini merupakan sejenis bahasa Austronesia dengan banyak perkataan dari bahasa Portugis.
The Tetum speak various dialects of Tetum. Tetun Prasa is the official language of East Timor alongside Portuguese. In East Timor alone, over 432,766 people speak Tetum as their first language (2015).
The lingua franca and national language of East Timor is Tetum, an Austronesian language influenced by Portuguese, with which it has equal status as an official language. The language of the Oecusse exclave is Uab Meto (Dawan).

The Tetum speak a Malayo-Polynesian dialect and practice slash-and-burn cultivation of corn (maize), sweet potatoes, dry rice, and vegetables. Fields are sown around a corn shrine. They also raise pigs and a few buffalo. The basic social and economic unit is the household, which usually consists of an extended family.
