Berat’s ancient citadel looms high above the newer part of the city and you can get up there on a tricky cobblestone path – don’t underestimate how steep this is! There’s been a fortress here since the 300s but the walls and towers as they appear today are from the 1200s.
- Explore Berat Castle. The long brushstroke of chestnut-coloured rooftops that make up Berat’s historic centre is painted through the Osum River valley.

- Explore the historic Mangalem Quarter. The river valley that runs through Berat dissects the city into two precincts: Mangalem (Mangalemi) and Gorica.

- Osum Canyon. Known as the Grand Canyon of Albania, Osum Canyon is one of the best things to see in Berat. It’s a great place to go hiking in Albania and is where you’re sure to see some of the lushest nature in the country.

- Wander around Mangelem. The historical part of Berat is actually divided into 3 distinctive parts – Mangalem, Gorica and Kalaja, the castle grounds. All of them are inhabited, were built during different periods and are very unique.
- Walk through The Gate of the Pasha. Now we can slowly start making our way towards the Berat Castle. But before you reach this point stop for a moment at the front of Gate of the Pasha at the foot of the hill.

Feb 13, 2024 · 1. Berat Castle is one of the top things to do in Berat. This 13th-century structure is also the biggest castle in Albania, its ancient walls telling the story of Berat. Most interesting is that locals still live within the citadel walls, meaning you’ll find houses, shops, and stalls within the castle quarter. It’s essentially its own village!
