- Lukas Verzbicas (’11) Sandburg HS & Lincoln-Way Central HS. One of the single greatest talents in prep distance running history, Verzbicas came on the national scene as a sophomore to set a prep record at 5k indoors.
- Craig Virgin (’73) - Lebanon HS. Virgin’s dominant record-setting performance of 13:50 at Detweiller Park his senior season, a record he set nearly four decades ago, has withstood a number of standout runners’ best efforts.
- Jorge Torres (’99) Wheeling HS. Torres is one of the most decorated prep harriers of all-time. A 4-time Foot Locker finalist, including a crown his senior year, he is the only male in Illinois history to win 3 state cross country crowns, and finished runner-up as a freshman.
- Donald Sage (’00) York HS - Elmhurst. From the most decorated program in the state, Sage is by far it’s most decorated runner. He won only one state cross country title, but was twice runner-up to Torres.

On a cloudy and cool autumn day on November 12, 1977, two of the Illinois all-time greats Tom Graves of Sandburg HS and Jim Spivey of Fenton HS went to the line not only to win a state championship but also to try to break Craig Virgin’s then five-year old course record of 13:50.6.
(R) Tom Graves wins his 2 nd state meet 2M title in 8:51.87 well ahead of Fenton's Jim Spivey in 9:00.3! (R) Bob Hicks comes out from the shadow of Tom Graves, winning the state meet mile, with a 4:08.6. Graves the outstanding Eagle junior is 2 nd in 4:09.3, giving Sandburg a1-2 finish.
