1944 Discovered and arrested. On 4 August 1944, the people hiding in the Secret Annex were discovered in a Sicherheitsdienst raid. Together with Victor Kugler and Jo Kleiman, two of the helpers, they were arrested and interrogated.
Anne Frank’s diary refers to Kugler as Mr. Victor Kraler. Mr. Kugler managed to escape a Nazi prison camp and survive to the end of the war, then immigrating to Canada with his second wife Lucy van Langen in 1954. The Kuglers rented the entire house with Mr. Kugler’s sister-in-law and husband occupying the second floor.
