It gained fame through the writings of renowned essayist and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau, who spent two years living in a small cabin near its shores in the mid-19th century.
Walden as a text finds its voice beginning in Chapter 2. For a shorter work by Thoreau that goes a long way towards distilling his philosophy pretty well, try his essay entitled Walking. Stick with Walden though even if you have to put it down for a time between chapters. There is a lot of value in its pages.
