    Dr. Riis, CU Boulder College of Music Riis compares musicology to detective work – finding an original, unresearched topic and becoming an expert through your dissertation. Like many professionals, he transformed his curiosity into his career specialty. As an undergraduate in cello performance at Oberlin, Riis was interested in the work of Will Marion Cook, a young African-American man who wrote and composed musical comedies. For his PhD, Riis studied Cook, and has gone on to specialize in musical theatre, particularly 19th and 20th-century American music.
