But back then they didn’t have sophisticated grooming machines and the moguls were big.
Development of the ski area on the south side of Whistler Mountain began. What is now called Creekside was once the original Village and featured a four-person gondola to the mountain’s mid-station, a double chairlift to the alpine tree line, and two T-bars.
As well, in 1965 London Mountain’s name was officially changed to Whistler Mountain, which Alta Lake locals had long called the mountain because of the whistling sound of hoary marmots which greeted summer hikers.
London Mountain was eventually chosen and renamed Whistler Mountain. Three unsuccessful bids were made in an attempt to secure the games between 1962 and 1973. In 1974 the B.C. government backed the town initiative and helped Whistler develop the proper infrastructure to make the dream a reality.
May 12, 2023 · Blackcomb Mountain opened to the public in 1980, and for two decades afterwards, the duelling resorts competed to be the best in the province. In 2003, the two mountains united officially as Whistler Blackcomb, and shortly after won the bid for the 2010 Olympic Games.
