Roughly triangular in shape, the island measures some 20 miles (32 km) from northwest to southeast and about 15 miles (25 km) from east to west at its widest point.
Many Barbadians now live overseas and outside of Barbados; the majority have migrated to Anglophone countries, including around 65,000 in the United States, 37,780 in Canada, some 19,000 in the United Kingdom, and some 500–1,000 Barbadians in Liberia.

Barbados is located in the Lesser Antilles island chain, which places it at the far eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea. In fact, some descriptions of the island place it outside of the Caribbean Sea, though it is still considered to be in the Caribbean region.
Barbadians made it as far afield as Australia and New Zealand. It is widely rumoured that one can find a Barbadian any where on earth. This story, whether apocryphal or not, clearly illustrates this.
