Feb 22, 2023 · Asturleonese is a Romance language spoken in Asturias, northwestern Castile and León, and Cantabria, as well as a small area of Portugal. It is a dialect continuum of mutually intelligible varieties and is often referred to by various regional glossonyms. Phylogenetically, Asturleonese belongs to the West Iberian branch of Romance languages and is classified as an endangered language by UNESCO.
MARTIN MAIDEN is Professor of the Romance Languages and Director of the Research Centre for Romance Linguistics at the University of Oxford. He is also a Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy. His recent publications include A Reference Grammar of Modern Italian (with Cecilia Robustelli, 2007).
