If you really want to understand the bible, throw that one away and buy a Hebrew English translation from a Jewish publishing house. Rabbi Aryeh Carmel's "Living Torah" is a colloquial translation to American English. Artscroll is a very traditional translation. Koren Rabbi Sacks is a lovingly rendered translation.
