Ariq Böke was the youngest son of Sorghaghtani Beki and Tolui, the youngest son of Genghis Khan. When Genghis died in 1227, the leadership of the Empire passed to Genghis' third son (Ariq Böke's uncle), Ögedei. He peacefully attended the elections of both his uncle, Great Khan Ögedei and Ögedei's successor and eldest son, Güyük.

Oct 19, 2021 · The traditionalists of the Mongol Empire backed Ariq Boke, while the elite princes of North China and Manchuria backed his brother Kublai. Early Tears Ariq Boke was the son of Sorghaghtani Beki and Tolui, Genghis Khan's youngest son.
Although Kublai attempted to subdue the Song while fighting Ariq Boke, he did not begin serious efforts to conquer them until 1265. It took over a dozen years, but by 1279, the Song military was broken and its royal family dead or in hiding.
Kublai Khan was fighting against the southern Song in 1260 when he received news that Ariq Böke was challenging him for the succession of the throne. Ariq Böke formed alliances with powerful members of the Mongol nobility to endorse him as a candidate for Great Khan.

Kublai Khan, Genghis Khan's grandson and founder of the Yuan dynasty. In 1259 the Great Khan Möngke died while Kublai khan, his brother, was campaigning against Song dynasty and Ariq Boke, his other brother commanded the Mongol homelands. After Möngke's demise, Ariq Boke decided to attempt to make himself Khan.

Kublai Khan (1215–1294) was in China when Mongke died. He and his brother Ariq Boke, who was based in Mongolia, were soon battling for the succession.
The led to war between Kublai and his brother Ariq Boke for the throne, culminating with Ariq’s surrender in 1264 and Kublai securing his title as Khan of Khans. However, the upheaval of this conflict broke Mongol imperial unity, and by the mid 1260s the Mongol Empire was irrevocably broken into independent Khanates.
