Whilst the site of Apollonia was once inhabited by Illyrian tribes, it was in approximately 588 BC that Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth led by Gylax founded the city on the right bank of the Aous (Vjosë) River.
The invasion then sparked what ultimately developed to be the Greco-Persian wars of the 5th century BCE, where Athens played a leading role among the Greek city-states involved. The initial beginning of this war in 492-490 went well for the Persians, as they destroyed the Greek city of Eretria and captured territory in the Cyclades and Thrace.
The harbour. The ancient harbour of Apollonia is located in an open bay, delimited to the east by Cape Naustathmos (Ras el-Hilal, راس الهلال) about 20 km away, and to the west by Phycus (Ras Amaar, راس عامر). After a while much of the structures of the ancient Greek port of Apollonia disappeared slowly by landslides.
