4.0. Patches. Screenshots. Release notes. Supports IA-32, Alpha, MIPS, and IBM PowerPC. This was the first version of Windows to bring the Explorer desktop from Windows 95 to the Windows NT line. A preview of this technology was shown as NewShell, installable on top of Windows NT 3.51.
Windows NT version 3.51 was Microsoft's entry into this field, and took away market share from Novell (the dominant player) in the following years. One of Microsoft's biggest advances initially developed for Windows NT was a new 32-bit API, to replace the legacy 16-bit Windows API.
Windows NT 4.0 was released in June 1996, introducing the redesigned interface of Windows 95 to the NT series. On February 17, 2000, Microsoft released Windows 2000, a successor to NT 4.0. The Windows NT name was dropped at this point in order to put a greater focus on the Windows brand.
